Whether you loved or loathed Madonna’s totally talked about Super Bowl performance, you have to admit that she and her skin looked stunningly ageless.
But that wasn’t always the case. Just a couple of years ago, the Material Girl was looking less than youthful. Darker circles were forming under her eyes, her cheeks were starting to sag and her pallor was getting ashen. Madonna looked tired.
So how did Madonna kick 53 in the face, literally, and look as fresh as a daisy at the Super Bowl?
The word among top NYC dermatologists is that Madonna’s youthful look is NOT the result of a traditional facelift. Instead, the superstar has undergone treatments with a Smartxide DOT CO2 laser, believes top NYC dermatologist, Dr. Bruce Katz.
“It gives a better result than a surgical facelift,” says Dr. Katz, “because you never get that tightened deer in the headlights look .”
“When you have laser treatments you CAN’T end up looking different — the treatments can only take you back to what you used to look like, whereas surgery can change the way you look,” explains Dr. Katz.

“It drills microscopic holes in the skin and vaporizes the skin’s damaged collagen which is responsible for wrinkling, loose skin, dark spots and lines,” explains Dr. Katz. “The laser also stimulates new collagen production which fills the channels drilled in your face and fills in your lines and wrinkles, as well as tightening the skin, says Dr. Katz, who has had highly successful results with many patients.
The side effects are fairly minimal. You’ll be red and puffy for a couple of days, so it’s best to have the treatments on a Friday afternoon so you look perfect again by Monday.
“The only thing is that you won’t see the full results of the treatments for three to six months. “It takes that amount of time for the collagen to come in and as it matures, it tightens the skin,” explains Dr. Katz, ”but you will see results after two to three sessions.”
Other benefits of the laser non-surgical facelift — the improvement in your face will be gradual so no one will notice that you’ve had work done, and once the new collagen comes in, it can literally take 15 to 20 years off your age and last up to five years — in which case you can do it again.
Most people require 4 to 6 session to get the best results and treatments cost about $975 per treatment, but that’s still far less than the typical $15,000 – $18,000 for a traditional facelift.
Now, I can tell you that I’ve tried the laser treatments and I can totally notice the results. I literally have no crow’s feet now, almost no lines under my eyes and my skin has never looked better or smoother, and I’m 55. So I am not surprised that Madonna has chosen this refreshing route.

How To Protect Protect Your Skin From Winter Sun Damage

When my doctor recommended I soak up some sun after discovering my vitamin D levels were dangerously low, I thought to myself: Am I slathering on too much sunscreen?
I'll admit that I've become quite obsessive about skin cancer prevention after meeting a twenty-something melanoma survivor last winter. But I wasn't about to skimp out on my sunscreen because this season has fewer patches of sunshine.
"Don't be misled by the dropping temperature," warns Dr. Bruce E. Katz, director of the JUVA Skin & Laser Center in New York. "The sun's harmful rays are just as strong and damaging despite what your thermometer says -- particularly the UVA rays which are responsible for aging skin. UVA radiation reaches deeper into skin and contributes to wrinkles and skin cancer risk. Nearly all (95 percent) of the UV radiation that we are exposed to is UVA."
Dr. Alex A. Khadavi, founder of Advanced Skin & Hair adds, "Reflection of radiation from snow requires aggressive sunscreen protection, maybe even more than summertime as individuals participate in snow activities like skiing and snowboarding. Almost 80 percent of UV radiation is reflected from snow while only 25 percent from sand."
Reconsider physical sunscreen. While this type of sunblock--which contains Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide--may be messy to apply, it offers the best year-round protection. "They provide better broad spectrum coverage as compared to chemical-based sunscreen which are usually either UVB or UVA blockers," says Dr. Khadavi. "Additionally, physical blockers work for a longer period of time giving longer coverage requiring less re-application. They are also less irritating than chemical blockers."
Beware of sunsreen's archenemy: sweat. "Many think that simply applying your daily SPF moisturizer once in the morning is sufficient for a day's worth of coverage. If you are outdoors and bundled up your skin still sweats and SPF needs to be reapplied throughout the day." says Dr. Katz. Continuously smooth on a naturally healing and moisturizing sunblock with a minimum of SPF 30, making sure that it has fully absorbed into skin.
Those may not be just any old spots. "Freckles, age spots, spider veins on the face, rough and leathery skin, fine wrinkles that disappear when stretched, loose skin, a blotchy complexion, and actinic keratoses (thick wartlike, rough, reddish patches of skin) can all be traced to sun exposure. The sun also attacks the skin's elastin, weakening the skin from springing back, and causing wrinkled and leathery skin," says Dr. Katz. "During the winter, look out for any rough, red skin, an increase in moles and broken blood vessels on teh face to detect sun damage. Also be aware any cuts or bruises on your skin that are not healing as this may be an early sign of skin cancer."
Protect your pucker. Windburn lips can be a pain, but to prevent this apply a petroleum-infused lip balm with SPF.
Enhance your sun protection with the right foods. "In general, fruits and vegetables are foods high in antioxidants and help us fight free radicals and sun damage, while foods such as meat, dairy products, simple carbohydrates, sugar and processed foods cause inflammation and can contribute to making sun damage worse," says Dr. Katz.
According to Dr. Khadavi, foods like leafy greens, peppers, squash, watermelon, blueberries and tomatoes that rich in vitamin C and the antioxidants caroteniods and lycopenes can help prevent sun damage.

Bonnie Says: Sharon Evans, The Mom Injecting Her 8-year-Old With Botox & Lip Fillers Is A Child Abuser!

Poor little Bree Evans needs to be protected from her deluded single mother who is abusing her both physically and emotionally. Don't YOU agree?
Sharon Evans, 33, may not be beating her eight-year-old daughter but she is battering her nonethless. The San Francisco Dept. of Child Protective Services has launched an investigation into this frightening situation and I hope they move swiftly to end this abuse.
Poor Bree is being injected every two months with BOTOX in the creases of her forehead and every three months with fillers in her lips. Her misguided mother thinks these so-called "beauty procedures" will help her become a bigger star than Will Smith's songstress daughter, Willow, 10.
Right now, she's entering Bree in beauty pageants for little girls and thinks the beauty procedures she's subjected her daughter to, will give her an edge on the competition. Oh, and she's also tattooed eyebrows on the little girl and plans to soon tattoo the eight-year-old's lips with lip liner.
It's absolutely dangerous according to plastic surgeon Dr. Adam Schaffner, Director of JUVA Plastic Surgery in NYC. "There's a risk of cosmetic deformity in which the girl would not have normal movement of her facial muscles,"he explains. "The lip fillers could cause an infection or even tissue death - called necrosis. In my opinion, the authorities should consider bringing charges against this mother."
Schaffner points out that on bottles of BOTOX is says: "Federal law restricts this device for sale by or on the order of a physician or licensed practioner."
Sharon Evans is a beautician, which she says qualifies her to use BOTOX or fillers, but Dr. Schaffner tells Hollybaby.com that beauticians are nOT "licensed healthcare practitioners who are authorized to inject BOTOX Cosmetic or filler materials."
Physical risks aside, this appearance-mad mother is inflicting enormous emotional damage on her daughter, say family therapists! And I couldn't be more in agreement! This woman is nuts and her daughter will pay the price!
"I question the motivation and even the sanity of doing something like this to a child, "says psychiatrist Dr. Jeff Gardere, a contributor to healthguru.com. Bree could be addicted to having these cosmetic procedures. She may feel she's not pretty without BOTOX injections. And when she's odler she could graduate to more severe cosmetic procedures. A social worker should look into this as a child abuse case."
Listen, this child is at the very least being subjected to unnecessary and physically dangerous procedures that could harm her. She has no say over what is being done to her. Her own mother is playing Russian roulette with her health. It's a little like Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy which is abuse, typically of a child, by an adult - often a mother - in order to seek attention or sympathy for the abuser.
But in this case, Bree's mother is seeking attention by trying to turn her daughter into a beauty pageant star! And she's given not an iota of thought to the consequences of her idiotic actions.
First of all, she's teaching her daughter that her outer appearance is all-important versus her intellect.
Secondly, she's making it extremely likely that Bree will develop an eating disorder, believes a family therapist Dr. Jenn Berman, author of The A to Z Guide to Raising Happy Confident Kids. "She is being taught that her worth and value are based on how many wrinkles she has. She will likely suffer from low self-esteem. In fact, it's pretty much a guarantee that a child in this situation could have a severe mid-life crisis when she's older."
I know that the San Francisco Human Services Agency is investigating the Evans case after receiving a large number of calls to the city's child abuse hotline, but I hope they investigate quickly.
This mother has to be told that she must stop injecting her daughter now and for good or she will lose custody of little Bree.
Bree needs to be protected from her abuser, her mother!

No one is a fan of the aging process. Men and women alike constantly fight the idea and reality of growing old. As the years start to show themselves on our face thre isn't anything you wouldn't consider to help turn back the time. When we reach a certain age, which of course varies for each of us, a telltale sign of the years under our belt (and stresses that came with it) is our eyes. You're red after laser treatments. If you look at her forehead, her cheeks and the size of her face....all pretty red. NEW YORK (CBS 2) — Superbugs, MRSA, flesh-eating bacteria, you’ve probably heard a lot about these frightening antibiotic-resistant infections. It used to be you only saw them in the hospital, but now people are catching these nasty germs in the community.

CBS 2HD’s Dr. Max reports on what to watch out for, what the infections look like, and what can happen if they’re not treated. He recently had a first-hand experience with MRSA on his elbow.

“Of course I knew intellectually what a bacterial skin infection can do and what it looks like, but even I was surprised at how fast it can move and how hard it is to get rid of,” Dr. Gomez said.

It’s been a little over two weeks and he’s just getting over it.

“As we see here, you have some redness and swelling in the elbow region,” Dr. Adam Schaffner of the JUVA Skin & Laser Center told Dr. Gomez.

That’s an understatement. Ten days after the infection started it was still hot, red and swollen, but it used to be more than twice as big.

Instead the problem was, as Dr. Schaffner explained, “there’s fluid there, and that collection of fluid has led to the spread of the infection, not only in that area but further up as well.”

“What you can’t see is hot and tender the elbow is. The really bad news is that when some of the fluid inside the infection was cultured in the lab, it grew out MRSA, which stands for Methicillin Resistant Staph Aureus – a fancy way of saying a strain of bacteria that isn’t easily killed, even with most antibiotics,” Dr. Gomez said.

Just how bad is MRSA? “It can start destroying tissues, the skin, muscle below it, and it basically eats up everything in its path. So it can really be a very serious infection,” said Dr. Bruce Katz of the Center.

It used to be doctors only saw MRSA in hospitals or medical settings where only the strongest, most resistant germs could survive, but increasingly, the superbugs are being found out in the community.

“It’s not clear where I picked up the MRSA, although given as much time as I spend reporting in hospitals, its not that surprising. The first and second antibiotics I took, my infection was resistant to, and now I have a fluid-filled abscess on my elbow,” Dr. Gomez said.

“When you have infected fluid locked into a certain space in a tissue, anti-biotics can’t get to them,” Dr. Katz said.

That means cutting it open, draining the fluid and packing it with anti-bacterial gauze to keep it from filling up again, and finally getting on an antibiotic that Dr. Gomez’ staph bug was sensitive to.

“The fact that you really knew what was going on there and you had treatment right away, you got on the right antibiotic, really got it very quickly, otherwise it could of really been a serious problem,” Dr. Katz told Dr. Gomez.

What was really amazing was how fast the infection grew. “On a Sunday morning I was fine. A few hours later my elbow was starting to hurt. By that night it was already hot and swollen,” Dr. Gomez said.

If you have a sore that gets red, hot or swollen, if the redness spreads or forms streaks away from the sore, get to a doctor right away.

“Delay for a day or even hours can be deadly but prompt treatment usually means complete recovery, I’m happy to say,” Dr. Gomez said.

But how does the bacteria get in there in the first place?

“The skin is a marvelous barrier to germs, but if you get a cut, a scrape, a bug bite, almost anything that breaks the skin can allow bacteria to gain a foothold. In my case, I was at fault. I was at my computer, with a nervous habit of picking at my elbow. I sort of self-innoculated myself with the bacteria that, like most people, I normally have on my skin. That’s all it took,” Dr. Gomez said.

So sad! Experts explain how Daryl Hannah is the latest star to suffer from a botched face from too much plastic surgery!

Daryl Hannah, 49 year-old actress of Kill Bill and Steel Magnolias fame, looks a lot different than she did when she burst on to the scene in the 1982 classic sci-fi film, Blade Runner. Hollywoodlife.com consulted with top plastic surgeons who believe Daryl has had not only fillers in her lips and cheeks, but also think she had a nose job!

Many stars opt for plastic surgery as they get older, but sadly, some go too far and surgeons we talked to believe Daryl falls into that category.

“Her face looks much rounder, everything about her face used to be much thinner, cheeks, jaw line, nasal labal lines, everything was much more pronounced,” Dr. Richard Fleming, a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon told us. “In my opinion there’s a lot more fullness and it’s not a natural contour. I have no idea what they did, but there is filler material in there.”

Dr. Adam Schaffner, a New York plastic surgeon, came to the same conclusion: Daryl’s had so much work done, her face is totally changed.

“It appears there has been additional fullness to the mid-face. It could have been with any sort of filler material like juvederm,” he said. He also believes Daryl may have had a nose job and said, “It could be lighting and makeup, but in [the more recent picture] her nose looks different.”

Scientific Evidence Proves SmoothShapes Reduces Appearance of Cellulite

Many of our patients have noted improvement – more than they’ve seen with other technologies. Efficacy of a New Fractional CO2 Laser in the Treatment of Photodamage & Acne Scarring

INTRODUCTION

A variety of fractional CO₂ laser devices are available for the treatment of photodamage and acne scarring. Early studies of these “microablative” devices show that parts of both the epidermis and dermis are ablated^1,2 and that tissue tightening occurs initially due to collateral heating and later during the 3 to 6 months after treatment due to collapse of the tiny vaporized columns.^1-3 Efficacy of the fractional CO₂ technique has been reported for the treatment of wrinkles, acne scars, striae, lentigines, solar elastoses, and other manifestations of photodamage.^4-7 This study evaluates the efficacy and safety of a novel fractional CO₂ laser device for improving facial rhytids, hyperpigmentation, enlarged pores, skin laxity, and acne scarring.

METHODS

Subjects (n=15) aged 31 to 81 years with facial rhytids, hyperpigmentation, enlarged pores, and skin laxity were treated 3 to 5 times at 3-week intervals. One subject had acne scars. Subjects received two passes with a microablative fractional CO₂ laser device (Affirm CO₂, Cynosure, Inc., Westford, MA). Treated areas included the entire face (n=7), perioccular areas (n=5), perioral areas (n=2), and cheeks (n=1). Target areas were cleaned and makeup was removed just before treatment. Lidocaine (30%) topical anesthetic was applied 20 to 30 minutes before treatment. All subjects provided signed informed consent to treatment and the study protocol was approved by the Independent Investigational Review Board, Inc., Plantation, Florida.

Clinical improvement was rated on a quartile rating scale (Mild = 0%-25%, moderate = 26%-50%, good = 51%-75%, and excellent = 76%-100%) from digital photographs obtained at baseline, and 1 and 3 months after the final treatment. Subject discomfort during treatment was evaluated on a scale of 0 to 5. Biopsy specimens were obtained before treatment and at 3, 7, and 14 days after treatment to evaluate healing response and neocollagenesis.

Multiple low-level treatments with cooling and reduced downtime were the preferred approach to treatment. Power settings varied from 15 to 25 W with incremental increases with each treatment. Dwell times were 0.5 to 0.8 ms and spot pitches were between 300 and 600 mm, most frequently at 500 μm. Gel (Aquaphor) and ice packs were applied to the target areas immediately after treatment. Subjects were instructed to gently clean treated areas and apply Aquaphor 3 to 4 times during the first 24 hours after each treatment.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The 14 subjects who completed the study achieved good to excellent improvement in overall appearance, with 60% rated excellent. Subjects received an average of 3.5 treatments. One subject was lost to follow-up. Improvements three months after the final treatment are shown in Figure 1. Improvement in photodamage was good to excellent in 92% of subjects and reduction in rhytids was good to excellent in 85%. A total of 79% of subjects achieved good to excellent improvement in pore sizes and skin laxity. For the single subject treated for acne scaring, improvement was graded “good” in overall improvement and in pore size reduction. Subjects tolerated the procedure well. On average, subjects rated discomfort during treatment at 3.0 ± 0.7 on a scale of 0 to 5. Erythema and edema persisted 2 to 3 days and subjects applied make-up and resumed normal activities 1 to 2 days after the procedure. One subject complained of itching, which resolved in a few days after treatment with oral acetaminophen. Scars and dyschromia were not observed. Histological slides after a single treatment showed new collagen formation (Figure 2). Clinical examples are shown in Figures 3 through 6.

In the present study, treatment parameters were selected on the basis of the subject’s age and severity of photodamage. This is consistent with the suggestions of Groff and coworkers (2008),³ who selected settings on the basis of the number and depth of wrinkles and the degrees of textural irregularity, dyschromia, capillary telangiectasia, and tissue laxity.

A summary of all the reports on the use of the fractional CO2 laser devices for the treatment of photodamage is beyond the scope of this paper. However, our results confirm those of Gold and colleagues,⁸ who showed improvement in photodamage parameters with minimal adverse effects after two treatments with the Affirm CO₂ device used in the present study. Physician and subject evaluations were favorable, discomfort during treatment was 2.0 (compared to our 3.0) on a scale of 0 to 5, and 11 of the 12 subjects would recommend the treatment to others. Our results are also similar to those of Gotkin and colleagues,⁷ who treated 32 subjects once with a device and scanner similar to the Affirm CO₂. Their improvements in wrinkles, scars, striae, lentigines, and skin texture and color were supported by histological evidence of neocollagenesis.

Our single patient with acne scarring showed noticeable improvement. This finding agrees with that of Gold and colleagues,⁸ who noted improvement in the acne scars of two subjects after two treatments with the Affirm CO₂ laser device.

As suggested by earlier studies, a single treatment at higher power and longer dwell time settings may achieve similar results as those of the present study, providing the patient is willing to accept the longer downtime. The design of the Affirm CO₂ laser device permits the user to customize outcomes by selecting power, dwell time, and spot pitch settings, and by adjusting the scanner.

CONCLUSION

The Affirm fractional CO₂ system provides substantial improvement for the treatment of facial wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, pore size, and skin laxity associated with photodamage. Adverse effects were minimal and transitory.

Can We Talk About Lindsay Lohan’s AMAZING Post-Rehab Skin? She Looks Five Years Younger!

Our girl is back from rehab with a new lease on life… complete with glowing skin!

Lindsay Lohan is out of the slammer and rehab early, and despite complaining about the paparazzi hounding her every move, seems to be on the mend in a big way because, hey, let’s chat about how amazing her skin looks! I mean, please do a comparison: pre-jail and rehab she looked puffy, tired and dare I say older than her 24 years. But now? WOW. Who knew jail and rehab could be so good for the complexion?!? My guess is days of sleep without drugs and alcohol has given her a rather spectacular glow, not to mention that incarceration food looks pretty great for one’s diet.

Dr. Ronald Minutoli, MD, a General Practitioner who doesn’t work with Lindsay, agrees with my observation of Lindsay’s new post-rehab glow:

“It’s very common for someone to look better after even a brief break from using drugs and alcohol. One of the things that alcohol does is that it causes fluid retention, which is reflected in the skin. Add to that the fact that people who are using it to excess aren’t usually eating in a healthy manner and it adds up. It doesn’t take long to see an improvement in the skin and someone’s general appearance after a break from drugs and alcohol that an appearance is better. You see better color return to the skin and yes, they look much healthier, even younger.”

However, Dr. Bruce Katz, board-certified dermatologist and Director of the Juva Skin and Laser Center, has a different take on Lindsay’s fresh new look:

“I see a number of changes. She probably stopped at her dermatologist’s office in between getting out of rehab and when this most recent photo was taken. Her cheeks are much fuller, so I think she’s had some cheek augmentation – Radiesse or Sculptra, most likely. Her eyebrows are more raised and her upper eyelid and lower lid are less baggy, which suggests she’s probably had some Botox to raise the brows and improve the appearance of the eyes. The lips are fuller, especially the bottom lip, so she’s probably had some filler injected, either Juvederm or Restylane.”

Whatever it is, I’m calling it now: this could be the best the starlet has looked since her days as a teen queen, and I love the fact that she looks absolutely gorgeous and young again. Has our pretty girl returned…or is it just Freaky Friday?

She’s gotten extensions, lost some weight and become more toned, and has started dressing in skimpier, skin showing outfits. Good for her! But is she going too far?

Kate’s been looking ultra-tan lately and while not at Snooki-level orange alert, tanning is addictive and could cause cancer. It’s not doing her any favors when it comes to aging her skin and adding wrinkles.

But who cares about wrinkles when you can botox them away? Recent photos of Kate’s face show her looking taught and immobile, a clear sign of botox. A few doctors have weighed in with their experts opinions.

“Her eyebrows are very elevated and arched — we call it the Dr. Spock look,” Dr. Bruce Katz of NYC’s Juva Skin and Laser Center tells HollywoodLife.com. “The botox was not injected properly. Most probably it was just injected in the middle of the forehead and there wasn’t enough done on the sides — so it’s allowed the muscles to still work on the sides and pull up the eyebrows.”

Another expert agrees: “What I can see in this photo, can be accomplished by Botox. Her upper eyelids look a little less hallow which can be a result of the brows being pulled upward.”

Botox is fine, but bad botox isn’t. Kate should look for another doctor or find a different route to looking younger. And stop tanning! I really don’t know where Kate finds time for this stuff between playing mom to 8 kids and her career. I’ve had a pair of pants at the laundromat for 3 months now. More power to her!

It was just something we've seen in our patients that has been in my opinion fairly impressive."

With traditional lipo procedures, patients would often need more work done to tighten the skin, often with tummy tuck or more recently, separate skin tightening devices. One of the advantages of a SmartLipo system is the ability to stimulate collagen growth and tighten the skin. Dr. Bruce Katz, a notable board certified dermatologist in New York says, "We just published a study in December [2009] in the journal Lasers in Surgery and Medicine showing that using laser lipo and particularly SmartLipo MPX, which is a two wavelength laser lipo device, that we can use it just for skin tightening alone now. So I think we get much better results by doing the skin tightening with the laser lipo fiber than by trying to use devices that work externally where you lose a lot of energy by cooling and going through the skin. We put the fiber right under the skin and we're getting significant skin tightening."

Dr. Millard is one of the pioneers of Hi-Def procedures and says that he's found SmartLipo Triplex to be highly effective. "It's the absolute technology of choice for high def arms, high def knees and high def legs. I don't use anything else but the Triplex. High definition SmartLipo is an extension of what we developed and brought to the United States about four years ago.... In areas where we've extended high definition liposculpture, namely high def arms where we're sculpting out biceps and tricep definition, deltoid/bicep group definition, and really creating the muscular and athletic look in both men and women."

The reason Triplex is preferred over other devices, according to Dr. Millard, are the wavelength characteristics unique to this modality. "It's the technology I use exclusively in this setting because of its wave characteristics, energy characteristics in the superficial subcutaneous fat, and its flexibility to be able to work around these tighter areas. It's the same for high def knees, calves and ankles as well. It's my technology of choice in this area for its ability to work in superficial fat with minimal induration and again to work around these tight curves comfortably."

The SmartLipo Triplex device is also easier to work with in a tumescent setting so that the patient is awake during the procedure. "The tumescent setting also lends itself to much more comfort for the patient using SmartLipo. SmartLipo, especially the Triplex, we don't have the heating issues we had with the Multiplex 1064 and the 1320 which were more of a race to get the work done before you had too much heat placed in the tissue and you really don't see that with the 1440. The 1440 is a very comfortable tool where you can get your work done fast and effectively and really not hit those terminal heating problems you were running into with the previous wavelengths."

Dr. Millard takes an artist's stance when it comes to revealing the beautiful body within his patients. "Essentially high def and liposculpture is a process by which we use the underlying musculature and space between the muscles as a template. I like to say that many of us have muscle definition but most of us hide it and high definition liposculpture essentially - at the end of the day - allows the surgeon to become the artist, the patient the canvas and we're creating living breathing works of art. It's an ever evolving process of studying what makes the human form beautiful and not just, as I teach my students, looking at somebody and saying they're beautiful but asking why are they beautiful."

SmartLipo HiDef with Triplex is not intended for those looking to remove a significant amount of fat. This procedure is more suited for someone who is in otherwise great shape but has some stubborn pockets of fat to get rid of. "It's lipo for people who work out and just trying to fine tune their body shape," says Dr. Millard

NEW YORK (Jun. 9) The Skin Cancer Foundation and a collection of its Seal of Recommendation holders teamed up to spread sun protection and skin cancer awareness by holding the first-ever Sun Safety Expo last week at Grand Central Terminal in New York. The event attracted more than 5,000 people.

Attendees received free product samples and coupons from 17 exhibitor, along with sun safety information from the Foundation. Attendees also had the opportunity to have a professional skin care evaluation provided by Juva Skin & Laser Center and Canfield Imaging Systems.

"The feedback from the event was extremely positive," stated Perry Robins, president of The Skin Cancer Foundation. "People were very eager to learn about how they can protect themselves from the sun."

Many patients are turning to non-invasive procedures to save them money, and time. Surgical procedures can often take weeks to heal but non-surgical treatments can often take only days. While the results aren't as dramatic, a non-invasive procedure can help keep the surgeon away for a bit longer. Fractional lasers help to rejuvenate the skin and stimulate collagen growth, improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Recently physicians have been using fractional resurfacing technologies outside of the typical treatment zone and finding great results.

"To tell you exactly how this started, we started using fractional devices," says Dr. Bruce Katz of the Juva Skin Center. "First non-ablative fractional such as Fraxel, then fractional Erbium and then most recently, fractional CO2, and we're working on the face, neck and chest area and we were getting great results. Our female patients were really thrilled and then a few of them started to say to me, 'Dr. Katz, my face looks great but what can you do about my eyes?' And I started thinking, what can we do about their eyes? You know, we haven’t been doing the eyelids at all."

Dr. Katz understood that there were safety concerns and first addressed those. "We thought there was some danger perhaps or that you have to be very careful (obviously) around the eyes. Then I started looking into it more carefully and I realized by putting corneal shields, metal shields under the eyelids, over the eyeballs, that the procedure would be perfectly safe. We started a study - we actually ended up publishing a study this past January in one of the medical journals of 100 patients so it was a really large study - we did 12 month follow ups; most studies you see in our literature maybe 3 or 4 month follow-ups. We did a full 12 month follow up to see that not only were we getting the benefits but that they would be long lasting and we found that they were."

The procedure has become known as the Madonna Lift and is able to treat several symptoms of aging eyes. "It actually not only takes away wrinkles and tightens the eyelid's skin, it takes away dark circles and we get an eyebrow elevation as well - an eyebrow lift. So we’ve been getting really dramatic results. Our patients are really thrilled and the best part about it is that there's minimal down time. Our patients generally do a few sessions and they can go back to work most of the time the next day. They can cover the redness with a little makeup so it's a really easily tolerated procedure particularly in New York, our patients work on wall street or they're really high powered, they can't afford to take off 4, 5 or 6 days with a surgical eyelift or a heavy duty laser resurfacing, so the Madonna Lift really fits that demand for people who are on the go who really have busy life styles but they want the improvement which they can get now with just a few sessions and minimal down time."

Dr. Katz says the Madonna Lift is an appropriate procedure for people of all skin types and hasn't come across any issues. "We find that we haven't had any problems, no side effects at all. The worst side effects is that you get a little red or a little puffy which is easily covered with makeup." Age is also not an issue, "We treat women in their 30's up to 80's. It all depends on how much sun exposure they've had. I'm actually seeing younger and younger patients now because they come in and they grew up in Florida or California and they have been baking in the sun and their developing a squint line or dark circles from too much sun and they just love the results."

Dr. Katz often performs the Madona Lift along with using botulinum toxins such as Dysport or Botox. "We find that we get even faster results because the botulinum toxin will access the muscles so the laser can get in there and even get faster collagen remodeling and skin tightening."

It does take a few sessions with the physician to see improvement. "It usually takes about two or three treatments until you start seeing the results. The interesting thing about it is that the results continue.... People will see an improvement over the next two or three months but collagen remodeling takes months to occur, so a lot of our patients say 'well you know I've had 3 treatments, I have nice results, but 3 or 4 months later I couldn't believe how much better it looked.' So the collagen changes take several months even after the last treatment."

The sessions aren't expensive, especially when compared to cosmetic surgery. "Usually we charge per session and it runs anywhere between $700-$800 in New York, and some people may need 2 or 3 or 4 sessions depending on how deep the wrinkles are and how much downtime the patient wants."

There are several fractional lasers on the market, and Dr. Katz has found that the SmartSkin CO2 works well because of its versatility. "A lot of the other fractional lasers don't allow you to change the shape of the laser beams or fits under the eyebrow and obviously you have to be very careful there."

Cover-up is your most important tool for looking naturally bright-eyed.

Your eyes may be the window to your soul, but they can also give people a glimpse into how sleep-deprived you are sometimes. Dark circles and puffy eyes don't make you feel your beautiful best.
Of course the best remedy is to get more sleep, but until you can work that into your schedule, grab a cup of coffee and take these steps to looking wide-awake -- even when you're not.
1. Deflate puffy eyes.

If you already drink coffee or tea in the morning, keep it up. Did you know that caffeinated drinks can help wake up the eyes too, says Dr. Bruce Katz, a dermatologist and director of Juva Skin and Laser Center in New York City, and a clinical professor of dermatology at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine. Caffeine revs up your circulation and that helps keep fluid moving away from the eyes where it can build up.
Also, anything cold will bring down swelling quickly. Store a jar of eye gel in the fridge. After making your coffee, gently tap it under eyes and on lids for a no-fuss fix. Eye gel that contains caffeine may also temporarily tighten skin, says Katz.
2. Choose a light and natural concealer.

Cover-up is your most important tool for looking naturally bright-eyed. Go for a cream or liquid formula that comes in a tube (instead of a thicker formula in a compact), says Heather Cummings, a celebrity makeup artist in Los Angeles. It will blend better into delicate eye-area skin and look most like your own skin. (Heavier concealers are more prone to caking or creasing.)
Pick the shade closest to your skin tone that also has a slight peach or yellow undertone. The tints help cancel out purple, blue and reddish tones common in under-eye circles.
3. Blend away dark circles.

Here's how to apply concealer around the eyes:
• Place a small dot on the skin at the inner corners of your eyes.
• Add one or two more dots under the eyes, covering any discoloration.
• With your ring finger, lightly tap to blend, keeping the makeup on the hollow above your cheekbone. (Don't blend it down over cheeks.) Continue until the makeup disappears into skin.
• Finally, dab a little bit of concealer on your lids to even out skin tone.
4. Curl your lashes.

You may think curling is a skip-able step, but it instantly makes eyes look more awake, even if you don't wear mascara. "Curled lashes emphasize the upper part of your eye so you look more alert," says Cummings. Curling also keeps the hairs from partially covering eyes or casting a shadow. Here's how to curl right:
• Place the curler as close to lash roots as you can.
• Look straight ahead and tighten the curler, holding it in place for five seconds.
• Release your grip and repeat once more.
5. Apply a thin coat of mascara.

A dark brown or black mascara helps lengthen lashes and draws attention to the upper part of your eyes. Here's how to apply a little bit of mascara for a natural look:
• Pick a waterproof formula, since smudges can make the lower lids look dark.
• Before you apply, wipe the brush with a tissue. This removes excess mascara that might otherwise cause clumps and thickness.
• Brush through lashes once or twice to give yourself an ultralight application that helps lashes look naturally long. This also helps make eyes look pretty and open.
6. Highlight eyes.

When you use a highlighting cream, it's like flipping on a light switch, says Cummings. The products contain light-reflecting particles, such as mica, that brighten the area and draw attention away from the shadows that make you look tired.
Cummings suggests blending a small amount of the cream just under your eyebrows, at the arch (on the center of your brow bone). Also touch a bit on the skin at the inner corners of your eyes.
If you have an extra 30 seconds, apply a slightly shimmery champagne-colored cream eye shadow on your lid, says Cummings. "Place the shadow at the inner corner and blend it out onto your eyelid with a shadow brush or your finger," she says. "Your eyes will instantly start to sparkle."

Mohs Micrographic Surgery for Skin Cancer featured on Good Morning America

This effective microsurgical treatment for skin cancers offers the best cure rate.

Treating skin cancer was revolutionized with the development of the Mohs Micrographic Surgery procedure. Live on camera today, Good Morning America weatherman, Sam Champion, underwent the Mohs surgery procedure at Juva Skin and Laser Center in New York. This treatment enables physicians to remove the skin cancer entirely, including the roots, while maintaining the safety of the surrounding tissues thanks to the use of microscopic surgical techniques.

Fort Lauderdale dermatologist Dr. Janee Steinberg uses this procedure in her Tamarac and Boca Raton offices to treat skin cancers. She says, "Mohs Micrographic Surgery allows for the removal of a biopsy proven skin cancer in the most effective way. With this technique, the least amount of tissue is removed while still being sure all of the margins are free and clear of the cancerous tissue. Therefore, the cosmetic results are usually excellent after the surgery."

The Mohs technique is especially useful in treating skin cancers that are otherwise challenging to treat. "Since this technique was developed, I have treated many patients with Mohs, especially when the tumors are on difficult areas like the nose and the ear, or are recurrent. This is a very effective treatment for skin cancer as it allows the dermatologist to remove the least amount of tissue, still being sure that all of the tumor is gone," says Dr. Steinberg. "Mohs is only used for skin cancer, but that includes Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, and some but not all Melanomas and Merkel Cell Tumors which is a rare form of skin cancer," she says.

While there are many different skin cancer treatment options, Mohs is considered to be the most effective. "There are many other types of skin cancer treatments including excision with dessication and curettage, wide excision with suture repair, and topical treatments with creams like Aldara. All of these treatments have a high cure rate, especially when the cancer is detected early. However, Mohs is believed to have the highest cure rate of any other treatment."

Dr. Steinberg says that despite the great strides made in skin cancer research, biopsy remains the most accurate method of diagnosis. "With all of the latest technology, it still remains true that a microscopic biopsy is the most definitive way to diagnose a skin cancer. Traditionally, surgical excision - whether by scalpel or Mohs technique - was the most commonly used technique. However, in recent years, topical Imiquomods like Aldara can be applied to the tumors for several weeks to change the immunity of the cells. Certain types of skin cancers can be completely eradicated by this treatment."

"I believe that statistics have shown that the best cure rates for skin cancer occur when Mohs Micrographic Surgery is performed. Still this cure rate is not 100% since it is possible for a recurrence to occur, especially in the edge of the treated lesion."

9 Top Rosacea Triggers and How To Tame Them

If you have rosacea, a rosy glow is the last thing you want. To mark Rosacea Awareness Month, find out how to tame the top 9 triggers that make your face red…

You really want to order that glass of wine. Or just spend a hot day outside in the sun.

But if you’re one of 14 million Americans with rosacea, you know what will happen if you do: Your face reddens with bumps and pus-filled pimples. Eyes tear and eyelids swell; then the itching starts.

These are classic symptoms of the chronic inflammatory skin condition. At first you may just blush easily. But if left untreated, blood vessels can show up like lines of red ink. Remember old-time actor W.C. Fields? His ruddy, bulbous nose and spidery veins were partly due to an extreme case of rosacea.

Fortunately, the W.C. Fields "look" affects men 25 times more than women, says dermatologist Charles E. Crutchfield III, M.D., medical director of Crutchfield Dermatology in Eagan, Minn.

Experts don't know what causes the disorder. It’s common in people with fair skin – especially people from Scotland, Ireland and England – and typically affects men and women older than 30. And if your parents had it, there’s a greater chance you’ll get it too.

It’s important to get “rosacea under control and keep skin clear so you don’t have those secondary side effects,” says Bruce Katz, M.D., director of the Juva Skin & Laser Clinic in New York City. “It’s not a dangerous condition and not a hard one to control.”

But it's a challenge, because many factors set off a red response and they vary from one person to the next.

“Rarely is everyone [set off] by everything on the list,” Crutchfield says.

Stress can set off an outbreak in some; others by favorite indulgences, like a hot bath, big mug of coffee or a long run.

“The key is to find out which triggers are yours, so you can avoid them,” Crutchfield says.

Here are 9 common rosacea triggers and natural tips to combat them:

1. Spicy foods
Hot peppers topped the list of trigger foods, according to a 2003 survey of 502 women with rosacea by the National Rosacea Society. Mexican-style foods, such as hot salsas, ranked second, followed by chili, hot sausage and Cajun foods. Even horseradish and vinegar can bring on scarlet in some.

Rosacea tip: Don’t worry, you’re not doomed to bland meals.

“Try spices, like Mrs. Dash [salt-free seasoning blend], that add flavor but not extreme spiciness,” Crutchfield says.

In recipes that call for red pepper or chili powder, substitute 2 parts cumin and 1 part oregano.

Other flavor boosters: Swap out a spicy salsa for a refreshing fruit salsa with peaches, raspberries, orange juice, chopped mint, a pinch of cinnamon and a splash of balsamic vinegar (skip the last ingredient if it causes inflammation).

2. Hot beverages
That grande latte will give you more than an energy boost.

“Having a hot cup of tea or coffee causes your blood vessels to dilate, so you get flushing,” Katz says.

Rosacea tip: Let steamy drinks cool down to room temperature before sipping – or order them iced.

3. Stress
According to a 2001 survey by the National Rosacea Society involving 700 people with the disorder, 91% said that emotional strain caused rosacea breakouts.

Although the link between rosacea and anxiety isn’t clear, experts, including Katz, often point to the “target organ” theory: Some people hold stress in their stomachs or get migraines. Others get rosacea’s red glare.

Rosacea tip: In the survey, 83% of those who used stress management techniques reported fewer outbreaks.

When you feel stressed, the National Rosacea Society suggests you take a deep breath to the count of 10, then breathe out slowly, also counting to 10. Repeat until you feel calmer.

Or practice visualization: Close your eyes and picture a scene you love – a beach, picnic spot, your patio – and sit quietly for several minutes as you do.

4. Hot baths
Soaking in the tub feels wonderful on a chilly day, but not if you have rosacea. Hot baths set off outbreaks in 53% of those surveyed in a 2010 National Rosacea Society survey of 424 patients.

Why? The hot water makes blood vessels dilate, says Doris Day, M.D., a New York City dermatologist and author of Forget the Facelift (Avery).

Rosacea tip: Keep your bath water about body temperature or cooler.

But don’t go cold: Your skin doesn’t like temperature extremes.

“The water should be as cool as you can stand,” Day says. “You shouldn’t have to acclimate to it.”

And skip the heavy scrubbing – it can further irritate your skin. Use a soft cloth and a gentle hand.

5. Strenuous exercise
Don’t stop exercising – just be mindful of how you do it.

Rosacea tip: To avoid a flare-up, follow these doctor-recommended tips to keep your temperature under control when exercising:

Warm up for 5 minutes by stretching and lifting light weights before you pick up the pace.
Exercise in the early morning or evening when weather is coolest. “Or exercise in an air-conditioned room,” Day advises. That means you can still go for that long run on hot days, as long as you do it on a treadmill at the gym.
Work out more often but for shorter periods.
Stay cool by drinking cold water while you exercise.

6. Alcohol
There’s no truth to the myth that too much booze causes rosacea, but alcoholic drinks, particularly wine, make blood vessels open and skin flush, says Crutchfield.

Plus, drinks are dehydrating, which shrinks pores, making it easier for them to clog. (Clogged pores are the first step toward rosacea blemishes and infection.)

Alcohol is also a triple threat because it leads to poor sleep, which increases stress, and that can promote an outbreak.

Rosacea tip: It’s best to avoid alcoholic drinks. But having rosacea doesn’t mean you have to be a complete teetotaler – if you’re willing to accept the consequences.“I have several patients who say that on New Year’s Eve or on their birthday, they’re going to have a glass of champagne,” Crutchfield says. “It’s a risk that at times they’re willing to accept.”

And sip water to keep from getting dehydrated.

7. Extreme hot and cold weather
Just like steamy beverages, a hot, sunny day can dilate blood vessels, leaving you rosy-cheeked.

Actually, the sun is a double whammy, because sunlight irritates the skin of as many as 61% of rosacea sufferers, according to the non-profit International Rosacea Foundation.

Cold weather is not much better because pores can clog more easily.

Rosacea tip: Stay as close to 70˚-80˚temperatures as much as possible.

“When you go out in cold or windy weather, put on a jacket and scarf to avoid getting too cold,” Day says.

If you’re sensitive to sunlight, wear sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat year-round – and stay in the shade as much as possible, she adds.

8. Dehydration
We’re made up of at least 50%-60% water, Day points out. “One important function of skin is temperature and water balance,” she says.

Drinking water helps wash out toxins that otherwise clog your skin.

Rosacea tip: Stay hydrated. Choose icy water to cool your system and keep blood vessels from dilating, the reason behind your flush.

9. Stimulants
Rosacea’s ruddiness is another good reason to cut down on caffeinated drinks, cigarettes and excessive sugar: All expand blood vessels and bring on the red glow.

They also make you sweat more, which clogs pores, and increases stress by revving up your nervous system. Even artificial sweeteners like aspartame can activate a flare-up. Rosacea tip: Reducing stress can help cut cravings for guilty pleasures.

“People tend to have more stimulants when they’re stressed – and stress is itself a stimulant,” Day says.

If soda is the culprit, switch to caffeine-free to see if it’s sugar or caffeine that’s aggravating your condition.

“Caffeine may not be a trigger for everyone,” Day says. “But if you notice that it makes you red or flushed, [cut back].”

Spring leg shape-up An easy, 6-step plan for smooth, sexy legs

It’s easy to ignore even the flabbiest, flakiest, and hairiest pair of legs when they’re covered
with pants and tights all winter. But the big reveal is right around the corner. Check out our simple steps to make your legs smooth and sexy just in time for summer. If you have more

The best expert leg advice we heard came from Montclair, N.J., dermatologist Jeanine Downie, M.D. Her tip: “Treat your legs like your face.” She recommends applying your skin-care regimen from head to toe—literally. Aesthetician Bethany Wojtech of Arcona Studio in Santa Monica, Calif., agrees: “Women don’t think about their legs until they have to show them, but that skin is just as important as your face and needs maintenance to be resilient.” Here’s a six-step plan:
STEP 1: Exfoliate. If your legs feel itchy or look chalky—even though you moisturize—the dryness won’t improve without exfoliation. “People wonder why they have !aky skin when
they use lotion,” Wojtech says, “and it’s because they overlook exfoliation and end up layering thick lotion on dead skin.” When you remove that top layer, moisturizer can actually get past the
surface to do its job. Exfoliating also helps hair stand up for a closer shave and prevents the razor from getting clogged with dead skin cells. TIP Gently buff legs with a clean washcloth or body scrub using circular motions (which are also good for decreasing water retention) or apply an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) lotion several times a week, less often if skin becomes irritated. An AHA lotion is your best bet because it exfoliates and moisturizes, says Boston dermatologist Ranella Hirsch, M.D. (She likes Eucerin with alpha hydroxy, but many major brands, including Dove, offer lotions with AHAs.) What to avoid: hot water (it’s drying) and scrubbing skin with
a loofah or “pouf.” “The shower is humid, and sponges trap bacteria, which can cause more problems like folliculitis,” says Downie, who recommends a washable body brush.
STEP 2: De-fuzz. Although wax and depilatories are e#ective, Downie says a triple-edged razor with an unscented shave cream is tried and true and can spare you from skin irritation. Use a clean, sharp razor from razor burn and folliculitis, an infammation of the hair follicles, says
dermatologist Dina Strachan, M.D., an assistant clinical professor at Columbia University. To help prevent razor bumps, shave as soon as you get into the shower. Hirsch adds that shaving also helps exfoliate. And if your skin is supersensitive, a razor is all the exfoliation you need.
Epilators are another option, but they take some getting used to. We tested them and found that they’re about as painful as waxing—not fun. But they do work. Our top picks: Braun Silk-épil Xelle 5270, $75, and Emjoi Optimax AP-98R, $80.
STEP 3: Rehydrate. After exfoliation and hair removal, moisturize! “Apply a moisturizer to damp skin to lock it in,” Hirsch says. It’s a must within 10 minutes of bathing, Strachan says,
or you miss out on hydration from water left on your skin. Cream lotions with natural butters like shea or coconut are nourishing without being irritating, Wojtech says.
STEP 4: Tone. A little self-tanner will make imperfections almost vanish by evening out skin tone and giving it a glow. “No doubt about it, selftanner helps a lot to diffuse the look of leg veins, scars, and cellulite,” Hirsch says. “It’s also good for older, white stretch-mark lesions.” A
“gradual” formula—mixed with plain lotion—is more foolproof than a full-strength self-tanner. It helps build a tan over several days and might have bonuses like firming ingredients or shimmer. Our last test of sunless tanners was a few years ago, but the top products are still around: Jergens Natural Glow, $9 (its formula has changed since we last looked at it), and L’Oréal Paris
Sublime Glow, $10.50, are moisturizing creams. If you prefer a spray, try Neutrogena MicroMist Tanning Sunless Spray, $11.
STEP 5: Protect. Sunscreen is mandatory when your legs are exposed. “It keeps skin tone even,
protects from UV damage, and prevents any dark spots from darkening,” Downie says. In our last test of sunscreens, Coppertone Water Babies SPF 50, $10.50, Walgreens Sport Continuous Spray SPF 50, $8, and Up & Up Sport Continuous Spray SPF 30 (Target), $5.25, gave the best
protection from UVA and UVB rays. STEP 6: Don’t forget the feet. Get them ready for the season’s hottest “safari chic” sandals. Pick a bright polish for your toenails and keep cuticles
in shape with a daily drop of olive or vitamin E oil.
What NOT to buy
The dermatologists we spoke to said hair-minimizing creams don’t work very well and can be
irritating. Instead, if you want smooth, low-maintenance legs,invest your time and money in
professional laser hair removal or electrolysis. (See box on next page for more info.) Some hairs
might grow back, but they’ll be thinner and lighter. If you still want to try a hair-minimizing
cream, Hirsch and Strachan say, it can’t hurt to use an inexpensive over-the-counter product in
conjunction with a professional hair-removal method. “There’s some value in hair minimizers,
but you have to keep using them,” Strachan says.
THE LATEST LEG TREATMENTS
Problem: Spider veins
DOCTOR’S RX Lasers, injections, and surgery can help make these little red and purple marks vanish. But sclerotherapy (saline injections to shut down vessels) is “No. 1 for efficacy and bang for the buck,” Hirsch says, “and lasers are a good supplemental option.” It’s often e"ective on even large, painful varicose veins, Navarro says. (Navarro is the developer of an alternative nonsurgical laser treatment called Endolaser to help eliminate large varicose veins.) COST It might take more than one treatment and starts at $200 per leg, depending on the extent of your spider veins and where you live.
WHAT ELSE YOU CAN DO Ask what solution your doctor uses for sclerotherapy, Downie advises. She uses a combination of glycerin and lidocaine because it doesn’t burn upon
injection like saline. “I strongly do not recommend atoxysclerol, which is used in Europe and isn’t FDA-approved here for anything,” she says. Also, your weight is important. “The heavier you
are, the more prone you are to spider veins.” If you have varicose veins, talk to your doctor about wearing support hose to improve circulation and avoiding hormones (like birth control
pills), which can exacerbate vein problems. Calf-strengthening exercises also help, Navarro says.
Problem: Red stretch marks, scars, or discoloration
DOCTOR’S RX Fractioned lasers work on all skin types—and body parts—to improve many texture and tone issues. “Only a fraction of the skin is treated, allowing the untreated, surrounding skin to assist in the healing process,” explains dermatologist Paul M. Friedman, M.D., author of the new book “Beautiful Skin Revealed: The Ultimate Guide to Better Skin” (San dow Media Corporation, 2010). Doctors choose a laser and a specific wavelength based on your needs and skin condition. Lasers can even help build collagen to plump thin skin. “It looks
deceptively simple, but using a laser involves understanding each skin type,” he says. “It’s not ‘point and shoot,’ so it’s critical to do your homework when choosing a doctor.” Ask whether yours is board-certified and request beforeand-after photos. COST It can take three to five visits that range from $300 to $1,000 each.
WHAT ELSE YOU CAN DO For pigment problems like marks from childhood mosquito bites or hairremoval wounds, Strachan recommends chemical peels.
Problem: Ingrown or unwanted hair
DOCTOR’S RX Laser hair removal tops every expert’s list because it damages the follicle down to the root in a series of pulses, and there are many types of lasers. Electrolysis is e"ective, but it’s tedious and might be painful on a large surface area, says Downie, who says she hasn’t shaved in five years after laser treatments. “Legs aren’t as hormonally mediated as your face, so
you’ll get great results faster,” she says. Lasers are color-sensitive and attracted to black, explains Strachan, which means “the technology isn’t as good for light hair, and people with darker skin must be careful of increased risk of burning. Even so, laser is the most effective choice for permanent hair reduction,” she says. And most people are happy because it might take only two sessions to see a difference, says dermatologist Bruce Katz, M.D.,
director of the Juva Skin and Laser Center in New York. COST It usually takes more than six
sessions ($300 to $800 each) to get lasting results.
WHAT ELSE YOU CAN DO If you don’t want to shell out thousands for laser treatments, Strachan advises trying one of the at-home versions, such as the new $250 No! No! Hair 8800.
We did not test the device or others like it in our labs, so we can’t vouch for them, and the user reviews we saw online were mixed. So before you give anything like that a try, you might want
to check out the epilators we mention at left. Whatever you do, don’t pluck or pick ingrown hairs. That can cause scarring, dermatologists warn.
Problem: Cellulite or stubborn fat
DOCTOR’S RX In-office “smart” liposuction uses a laser to destroy fat cells and remove bulges like saddlebags or fleshy knees in one session, Katz says. But it’s most effective if you’re nearing your fitness goal and still have some stubborn areas, he says. Patients are awake and under local anesthesia. A doctor makes a tiny incision and lasers the fibers under the skin, then suctions
out the liquefied fat. “The technology has evolved, but it still has a way to go,” Friedman says.
COST It depends on the area, but approximately $2,500.
WHAT ELSE YOU CAN DO Doctors stand by good old-fashioned healthful eating and exercise as the best way to get rid of annoying fat pockets. “I see smart lipo having a supplemental
role,” Hirsch says.

Taxes and Tighter Restrictions Upcoming for Indoor Tanning

As part of the healthcare reform package signed into law this past week, millions of Americans will pay more to use indoor tanning beds. The FDA is also contemplating enforcing stricter age limits for those who wish to use the facilities.
According to Dr. Bruce E. Katz, educational spokesman for The Skin Cancer Foundation, more than 1 million Americans use tanning salons on an average day.
The “tan tax”, an additional 10% tax on tanning salon fees, will go into effect on July 1st, 2010. The Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation estimates that it will raise about $2.7 billion over the next decade to help offset the cost of the healthcare overhaul.
Skin experts says that the tax will do more – it will also save lives. Dr. Katz says that there are more than 3.5 million cases of skin cancer detected each year and that those who use tanning beds are 2.5 times more likely to develop squamous cell carcinoma and 1.5 times more likely to develop basal cell carcinoma.
An FDA advisory panel has also recommended that the agency consider banning the use of tanning beds among teens younger than 18, or at least require parental consent. The FDA report estimates that about 35% of 17-year-old girls use tanning machines, and that first exposure to tanning beds in youth increases melanoma risk by 75%.
The American Academy of Dermatology Association (AADA) was part of the panel discussion. President William D. James MD FAAD, says "The AADA urged the FDA to ban indoor tanning devices because they emit ultraviolet radiation that has been shown to cause skin cancer including melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.”
“Compelling, irrefutable scientific evidence shows that indoor tanning is causing skin cancer in our young people and that is unacceptable," he continued. "At the very least, we encourage the FDA to shift the classification of indoor tanning to one that more closely matches the health risks of these devices and place additional regulations on these harmful devices," he said.
Melanoma is now the most common form of cancer for young adults 25-29 years old, and is the second most common form of cancer for adolescents and young adults 15-29 years old. In fact, melanoma is increasing faster in females 15-29 years old than in males in the same age group.
Currently, more than 30 states already have tanning salon regulations in place, but the new FDA requirements would apply nationally.

Tanning salons push back on regulations

WASHINGTON, March 29 (UPI) -- The trade association for the U.S. tanning salon industry says taxes and restrictions proposed by federal regulators are excessive.
The Indoor Tanning Association said in a written statement it hoped the Food and Drug Administration would study the matter further and "base any decision on sound science."
An FDA advisory last week recommended the agency consider rules requiring teenagers get their parents' permission before visiting a tanning salon. They also recommended raising the classification of tanning beds as medical devices to allow greater regulation.
In addition, healthcare reform legislation includes a 10 percent tax that could dissuade cash-strapped teens from using tanning beds, which some critics say can increase the risk of skin cancer.
"We'd like to see tanning beds banned completely, but this is a good start," Dr. Bruce Katz, spokesman for the Skin Cancer Foundation, told USA Today.

Tanning beds face new taxes and restrictions

Growing concerns about the dangers of indoor tanning beds are leading to new taxes — and possibly new restrictions — designed to curb the practice among young people.

A Food and Drug Administration advisory panel recommended Thursday that the agency consider actions such as requiring that teenagers get parental consent before using a tanning bed or even banning the use of tanning beds among teens. The advisers also recommended reclassifying tanning lamps from Class I medical devices — a category that includes tongue depressors and elastic bandages — to a Class II or Class III device, which would permit the agency to impose greater restrictions.

About 35% of 17-year-old girls use tanning machines, an FDA report says. People under 30 who use tanning machines increase their risk of skin cancer by 75%, according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, which is affiliated with the World Health Organization. That agency last July listed ultraviolet radiation-emitting beds as "carcinogenic to humans," its highest category of cancer risk.

The melanoma rate among young women nearly tripled from 1973 to 2004, a National Cancer Institute study showed.

In a statement, the Indoor Tanning Association described the panel's recommendations as "excessive" and added, "It is our sincere hope that the FDA will fully explore this issue and base any decision on sound science."

Because teens have less spending money than adults, a new 10% tax on indoor tanning — included in the health reform bill signed last week by President Obama — may make some young people think twice about tanning, says dermatologist Bruce Katz, a spokesman for the Skin Cancer Foundation and director of the Juva Skin and Laser Center in New York. The tax, scheduled to take effect July 1, is expected to raise $2.7 billion over 10 years to help offset the costs of the bill, Katz says. "We'd like to see tanning beds banned completely, but this is a good start," Katz says.

The Federal Trade Commission also has been cracking down on the marketing of indoor tanning. In January, the agency charged the Indoor Tanning Association with making false health and safety claims in its ads. The association agreed to pull the disputed ads.

New Health Care Reform Bill Imposes a Ten Percent Tax on Tanning Bed Use

New York, NY (March 22, 2010) - The House’s approval of the 10 percent excise tax on the use of indoor tanning beds as part of the new healthcare reform bill is an important step forward in the fight against skin cancer. With more than 3.5 million estimated cases each year, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the US, and scientific research has proven a direct link between all forms of skin cancer and ultraviolet radiation (UVR), including the UVR from indoor tanning beds.

“This tax is a master stroke, akin to the sin tax on cigarettes; both tanning and smoking are activities scientifically proven to cause harm to the human body,” said Bruce E. Katz,MD, educational spokesperson for The Skin Cancer Foundation. “The tax will hopefully serve a double purpose, not only raising billions for health care, but giving people one more reason to protect their health by staying away from tanning salons.”

On an average day, more than one million Americans use tanning salons. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), affiliated with the World Health Organization, published a landmark report in 2009 based on exhaustive research placing the ultraviolet radiation (UVR) produced by tanning beds among the most dangerous forms of radiation for humans, alongside other forms including radon and plutonium as well as solar UVR.

Seventy one percent of tanning salon patrons are girls and women aged 16-29. Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, is the most common form of cancer for young adults 25-29 years old. According to a new study of melanoma’s genetic makeup, the vast majority of mutations found in melanoma are caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. First exposure to tanning beds in youth increases melanoma risk by 75 percent.

In addition, people who use tanning beds are 2.5 times more likely to develop squamous cell carcinoma and 1.5 times more likely to develop basal cell carcinoma. More than 250,000 cases of squamous cell carcinoma, the second most common form of skin cancer, are diagnosed each year in the US, resulting in approximately 2,500 deaths. Basal cell carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer, is rarely fatal, but can be highly disfiguring.

“Skin cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer,” said Perry Robins, MD, President, The Skin Cancer Foundation. “Reducing UVR exposure is simply the easiest and most important prevention measure one can take.”

The tax, which is estimated to raise $2.7 billion over ten years, will take effect on July 1, 2010. In addition, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is conducting an Advisory Panel Committee Meeting on Thursday, March 25 to review the classification of tanning beds which could result in stricter regulations, including a ban on use by minors.
