Want to have that area under your eyes be as smooth as a baby’s bottom? I sure do!
And the good news today is that dermatologists swear you can turn back the clock, if you start seriously protecting your skin against the evil rays of the sun AND start using the right undereye cream.
Here’s what you need to know and what to do:
* The skin under the eyes is the thinnest skin on the face. It has very few sebaceous (oil – producing) glands so it gets dry easily and as you age, all your skin gets thinner, so you can develop that awful hollow look under your eyes, explains Dr. Howard Sobel, a clinical dermatologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in NYC.
* Because it is thinnest , the skin under your eyes is the MOST prone to sun damage of any skin on your body. That’s why you develop thin lines and wrinkles there first.
* Heavy under eye moisturizers can make your eyes puffy because they enable your skin to absorb too much water — the opposite effect to what you want.
Now here’s what you need to do and try!
* ALWAYS WEAR SUNSCREEN under your eyes, and below your eyebrows, to protect your youthful looks, when you’re at the beach or spending hours outdoors!
o Put At least a quarter teaspoon of sunscreen under each eye, advises Dr. Sobel
o For daily workday protection — use a special under eye cream with an SPF of at least 15
* Chose a specifically formulated daily under eye cream that’s packed with “peptides” to stimulate collagen production and antioxidants, to fight the effects of pollution, the sun and natural aging, says Dr. Patricia Wexler, a cosmetic dwematologist in NYC.
o Look for a 3 in 1 eye cream advises Dr. Wexler, that will depuff, protect against sun damage and build new collagen, which fills out the fine lines and wrinkles under the eyes.
o Look for these ingredients on bottles, and make sure your cream has at least one of these : peptides, vitamin C, retinols and kineten (a growth factor)
o Try different eye creams for day and night, suggests dermatologist Dr. Bruce Katz. He recommends a peptide cream, to slow the aging of skin cells for the daytime, and a cream with anti-oxidants or growth factors, like the cream, Neocutis, at night.
