Top dermatologists tell you why using a greater SPF in the warmer months is a great way to protect your skin, despite your indoor office job in the cool airconditioning. If you’re looking for a moisturizer with SPF for every day, shop our product picks!
SPF is the first thing to consider, according to dermatologist and global skin care expert Dr. Zein Obagi.
“Warmer weather typically means summer is coming. Thus, your chances of more intense exposure to ultraviolet light are much greater. You should definitely increase your sun protection factor from SPF 15 to SPF 30 in warmer weather,” says Dr. Obagi.
Not outside during the day in the summer? You may not get a sunburn, but your skin will definitely start to show signs of aging.
“Seventy percent of all UV damage is from casual exposure, getting unintended sun on your skin. UV radiation from the sun comes right through the clouds, not to mention directly through an office or car window. The odds of getting sunburn are slight, as the UVB (burning) rays are short and will not have a direct affect on the skin. However, the UVA (aging) rays are very long and penetrate deep into the lower layers of the skin, where new skin cells, collagen and elastin are formed. The latent damage of these aging rays typically appear later in life,” explains Dr. Obagi.
Using a moisturizer with SPF is a great way to add another layer of protection to your skincare routine and add to the protection in your daily sunscreen.
NYC dermatologist Dr. Bruce Katz wants people to remember that while moisturizers with SPF are great, it’s “best to use a sunscreen” for protection and you need to hit at least SPF 30 all year round.
If your skin is acne-prone or sensitive and you prefer a facial moisturizer with an SPF of 30 or high, shop our favorites and make sure to coat any exposed skin with sunscreen whether you work indoors or out!
