Check Out These New Skincare Weapons – Glycolic Face Washes!

Want clear skin like Jessica Alba? There’s a new way to wash your face that really WILL fight acne!

Staring at celebs who have seemingly flawless complexions can be really daunting when you’re working with acne, blackheads or oily skin. This is when you need to get your hands on the ultimate secret beauty weapon: glycolic face washes! Intrigued? Read on…

So, what exactly what are glycolic washes and how do you use them properly? Dr. Bruce Katz, board-certified dermatologist and Director of the Juva Skin and Laser Center, explains:

“Glycolic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), which is used to help to make the skin cells less “sticky.” This allows skin to exfoliate more easily, so the act of washing your face with one of these products actually expedites the production of new skin. It’s also a great way to unblock pores, which makes it ideal for people with acne-prone skin or those prone to blackheads or whiteheads. The washes smooth and improve the overall texture of the skin.”

Dr. Katz recommends the products for people who have acne-prone and oily skin, but he does caution that you should be careful if you have sensitive skin or eczema. As always, consult your dermatologist before starting any new skin regimen just to be safe.

Sound good? Check out the products in the gallery below, which includes Dr. Katz’ own Juva Glycolic Cleanser Face and Body Wash. There are all sorts of products (even one for men!) at all price points. Go forth and get glowing, fabulous skin, BFFs!

TRADITIONAL COSMETIC SURGERY GETS A “LIFT” WITH AN UPDATED APPROACH New Procedure Restores The Younger Looking Face

October 12, 2010 (New York, NY) – Adam D. Schaffner, M.D., F.A.C.S., Director of Plastic Surgery at JUVA Skin and Laser Center in Manhattan, is challenging the “one size fits all” approach to the traditional facelift with a new, customizable, minimally-invasive and affordable procedure named JuvaLift™.

We all know how the subtle changes on our face reveal our age. A smile turning to wrinkles, cheeks losing their plumpness, or eyes showing our exhaustion detract from looking vibrant and youthful. Instead of undergoing a typical facelift to merely tighten tissue, Dr. Schaffner’s goal is to reveal his patient’s younger face instead of a newly constructed one. In addition to offering a tailored approach to cosmetic plastic surgery, JuvaLift is performed in the comfort of JUVA’s accredited surgery center without general anesthesia, thereby minimizing risk, recovery time and expense.

While there have been major advances in injectable and laser technology, a “lift” is often necessary to obtain long-lasting results. JuvaLift is ideal for patients who are looking for changes to be made to key areas of their face. The procedure includes lifting tissue, removing excess skin that has sagged and smoothing out wrinkles. In addition, a patient’s own fat is often used to help restore fullness and improve skin quality. Patients have found the results to be transforming.

“At JUVA, our patients come to us for state-of-the-art, specialized procedures in plastic and laser surgery. JuvaLift offers those with very busy lives a safe and affordable approach to reversing some of the signs of aging,” said Dr. Adam Schaffner. “At JUVA, we are constantly perfecting the way our patients look while remaining sensitive to their concerns. This procedure goes a step beyond simply reversing the look of aging by targeting different parts of the face in need of improvement to help to restore a patient’s younger self.

JuvaLift takes one to three hours to perform. Patients should allow ten to fourteen days to recover from this procedure.

For more information about JuvaLift, please see www.juvaplasticsurgery.com or call (212) 688-5882.

So sad! Experts explain how Daryl Hannah is the latest star to suffer from a botched face from too much plastic surgery!

Daryl Hannah, 49 year-old actress of Kill Bill and Steel Magnolias fame, looks a lot different than she did when she burst on to the scene in the 1982 classic sci-fi film, Blade Runner. Hollywoodlife.com consulted with top plastic surgeons who believe Daryl has had not only fillers in her lips and cheeks, but also think she had a nose job!

Many stars opt for plastic surgery as they get older, but sadly, some go too far and surgeons we talked to believe Daryl falls into that category.

“Her face looks much rounder, everything about her face used to be much thinner, cheeks, jaw line, nasal labal lines, everything was much more pronounced,” Dr. Richard Fleming, a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon told us. “In my opinion there’s a lot more fullness and it’s not a natural contour. I have no idea what they did, but there is filler material in there.”

Dr. Adam Schaffner, a New York plastic surgeon, came to the same conclusion: Daryl’s had so much work done, her face is totally changed.

“It appears there has been additional fullness to the mid-face. It could have been with any sort of filler material like juvederm,” he said. He also believes Daryl may have had a nose job and said, “It could be lighting and makeup, but in [the more recent picture] her nose looks different.”

Scientific Evidence Proves SmoothShapes Reduces Appearance of Cellulite

By Kevin A. Wilson, Contributing Editor

SmoothShapes XV attacks cellulite noninvasively by combining mechanical manipulation (vacuum suction and massaging rollers), with laser and light wavelengths (915 nm and 650 nm) in one device. Dr. Kulick explained this patented mechanism of action known as Photomology®; “There are three components to treatment with the SmoothShapes device. First is laser energy:
the 650 nm wavelength transcutaneously promotes the expansion of pores in the cell membrane of adipocytes to increase permeability, whereas the 915 nm wavelength softens the fat under the skin’s surface, so that it is more easily expressed by the cell and more readily removed through the lymphatic system, and thus eliminated from the body. Circulation and inflammation are also improved by the 915 nm wavelength.” “SmoothShapes’ suction component is thought to stretch the fibrous septae that tether the hypodermis to the fascia below and provide a matrix to support the surrounding fatty tissue,” Dr. Kulick continued. “The uneven anatomical arrangement of this lattice is thought to be a major contributor to the appearance of cellulitic dimpling. Roller massage gently promotes the photothermal expression and drainage of lipid material, as well as the mechanical manipulation of the fibrous septae. In theory, SmoothShapes utilizes these three components together to maximize the effect, and results suggest that this theory is sound.” According to Bruce Katz, M.D., medical director of the Juva Skin and Laser Center in New York, N.Y., SmoothShapes represents the first truly effective technology for moderate cellulite. “We see improvement in dimpling and skin seems firmer, as well as smoother. Many of our patients have noted improvement – more than they’ve seen with other technologies. We usually prescribe six to eight treatments, once or twice a week, with maintenance once or twice a year. It’s not a cure for major or type 3 cellulite, but people with moderate type 1 or 2 are very happy with improvement. Clinically, I’m comfortable saying we often see 60% to 70% improvement with SmoothShapes alone.”

Efficacy of a New Fractional CO2 Laser in the Treatment of Photodamage & Acne Scarring

Bruce Katz

Department of Dermatology, Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, Juva Skin & Laser Center, New York, New York

INTRODUCTION

A variety of fractional CO2 laser devices are available for the treatment of photodamage and acne scarring. Early studies of these “microablative” devices show that parts of both the epidermis and dermis are ablated1,2 and that tissue tightening occurs initially due to collateral heating and later during the 3 to 6 months after treatment due to collapse of the tiny vaporized columns.1-3 Efficacy of the fractional CO2 technique has been reported for the treatment of wrinkles, acne scars, striae, lentigines, solar elastoses, and other manifestations of photodamage.4-7 This study evaluates the efficacy and safety of a novel fractional CO2 laser device for improving facial rhytids, hyperpigmentation, enlarged pores, skin laxity, and acne scarring.

METHODS

Subjects (n=15) aged 31 to 81 years with facial rhytids, hyperpigmentation, enlarged pores, and skin laxity were treated 3 to 5 times at 3-week intervals. One subject had acne scars. Subjects received two passes with a microablative fractional CO2 laser device (Affirm CO2, Cynosure, Inc., Westford, MA). Treated areas included the entire face (n=7), perioccular areas (n=5), perioral areas (n=2), and cheeks (n=1). Target areas were cleaned and makeup was removed just before treatment. Lidocaine (30%) topical anesthetic was applied 20 to 30 minutes before treatment. All subjects provided signed informed consent to treatment and the study protocol was approved by the Independent Investigational Review Board, Inc., Plantation, Florida.

Clinical improvement was rated on a quartile rating scale (Mild = 0%-25%, moderate = 26%-50%, good = 51%-75%, and excellent = 76%-100%) from digital photographs obtained at baseline, and 1 and 3 months after the final treatment. Subject discomfort during treatment was evaluated on a scale of 0 to 5. Biopsy specimens were obtained before treatment and at 3, 7, and 14 days after treatment to evaluate healing response and neocollagenesis.

Multiple low-level treatments with cooling and reduced downtime were the preferred approach to treatment. Power settings varied from 15 to 25 W with incremental increases with each treatment. Dwell times were 0.5 to 0.8 ms and spot pitches were between 300 and 600 mm, most frequently at 500 μm. Gel (Aquaphor) and ice packs were applied to the target areas immediately after treatment. Subjects were instructed to gently clean treated areas and apply Aquaphor 3 to 4 times during the first 24 hours after each treatment.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The 14 subjects who completed the study achieved good to excellent improvement in overall appearance, with 60% rated excellent. Subjects received an average of 3.5 treatments. One subject was lost to follow-up. Improvements three months after the final treatment are shown in Figure 1. Improvement in photodamage was good to excellent in 92% of subjects and reduction in rhytids was good to excellent in 85%. A total of 79% of subjects achieved good to excellent improvement in pore sizes and skin laxity. For the single subject treated for acne scaring, improvement was graded “good” in overall improvement and in pore size reduction. Subjects tolerated the procedure well. On average, subjects rated discomfort during treatment at 3.0 ± 0.7 on a scale of 0 to 5. Erythema and edema persisted 2 to 3 days and subjects applied make-up and resumed normal activities 1 to 2 days after the procedure. One subject complained of itching, which resolved in a few days after treatment with oral acetaminophen. Scars and dyschromia were not observed. Histological slides after a single treatment showed new collagen formation (Figure 2). Clinical examples are shown in Figures 3 through 6.

In the present study, treatment parameters were selected on the basis of the subject’s age and severity of photodamage. This is consistent with the suggestions of Groff and coworkers (2008),3 who selected settings on the basis of the number and depth of wrinkles and the degrees of textural irregularity, dyschromia, capillary telangiectasia, and tissue laxity.

A summary of all the reports on the use of the fractional CO2 laser devices for the treatment of photodamage is beyond the scope of this paper. However, our results confirm those of Gold and colleagues,8 who showed improvement in photodamage parameters with minimal adverse effects after two treatments with the Affirm CO2 device used in the present study. Physician and subject evaluations were favorable, discomfort during treatment was 2.0 (compared to our 3.0) on a scale of 0 to 5, and 11 of the 12 subjects would recommend the treatment to others. Our results are also similar to those of Gotkin and colleagues,7 who treated 32 subjects once with a device and scanner similar to the Affirm CO2. Their improvements in wrinkles, scars, striae, lentigines, and skin texture and color were supported by histological evidence of neocollagenesis.

Our single patient with acne scarring showed noticeable improvement. This finding agrees with that of Gold and colleagues,8 who noted improvement in the acne scars of two subjects after two treatments with the Affirm CO2 laser device.

As suggested by earlier studies, a single treatment at higher power and longer dwell time settings may achieve similar results as those of the present study, providing the patient is willing to accept the longer downtime. The design of the Affirm CO2 laser device permits the user to customize outcomes by selecting power, dwell time, and spot pitch settings, and by adjusting the scanner.

CONCLUSION

The Affirm fractional CO2 system provides substantial improvement for the treatment of facial wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, pore size, and skin laxity associated with photodamage. Adverse effects were minimal and transitory.

New Skin Tightening Laser Technology Provides Increased Efficacy

A new skin rejuvenation treatment promises dramatic skin tightening and cellulite treatment with no downtime compared with other skin anti-aging care approaches. This recent innovation in laser skin treatments combines two radio frequency modes into one device, effectively delivers two treatments in one. The Accent Dual Mode RF System uses unipolar and bipolar radio frequency to tighten skin by focusing laser on both shallow and deep tissue depths. By using two radio frequencies – one that treats thinner skin, such as skin that lies just over bone, and one that penetrates deeper into dermal and sub-dermal tissues, the technology can be used to treat a wide range of aesthetic conditions.

Some benefits of this approach are that it is non-invasive, requires no anesthesia, and is a virtually painless skin rejuvenation treatment. Skin tightening laser treatments that are less invasive and provide for a speedier recovery. The Accent Dual Mode RF System, because it does not use consumables, allows the treatment of larger areas of tissue to be more effective, making for minimal recovery time compared to earlier treatments. The technology can also be combined with other non-surgical facelift procedures to enhance its skin-tightening effects. Many patients are noticing a significant difference in skin laxity immediately following treatment.

Accent Dual Mode was developed by Alma Lasers Ltd., a leading developer and marketer of light, laser, and radio frequency-based aesthetic devices used in dermatology. Clinical trials of the technology demonstrated that Accent was particularly effective in the treatment of skin laxity in the neck.

Bruce E. Katz, M.D. is Clinical Professor of Dermatology at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Director of the Cosmetic Surgery & Laser Clinic at Mount Sinai Medial Center, and Director of the JUVA Skin & Laser Center located at 60 East 56th Street in Manhattan.

Can We Talk About Lindsay Lohan’s AMAZING Post-Rehab Skin? She Looks Five Years Younger!

Our girl is back from rehab with a new lease on life… complete with glowing skin!

Lindsay Lohan is out of the slammer and rehab early, and despite complaining about the paparazzi hounding her every move, seems to be on the mend in a big way because, hey, let’s chat about how amazing her skin looks! I mean, please do a comparison: pre-jail and rehab she looked puffy, tired and dare I say older than her 24 years. But now? WOW. Who knew jail and rehab could be so good for the complexion?!? My guess is days of sleep without drugs and alcohol has given her a rather spectacular glow, not to mention that incarceration food looks pretty great for one’s diet.

Dr. Ronald Minutoli, MD, a General Practitioner who doesn’t work with Lindsay, agrees with my observation of Lindsay’s new post-rehab glow:

“It’s very common for someone to look better after even a brief break from using drugs and alcohol. One of the things that alcohol does is that it causes fluid retention, which is reflected in the skin. Add to that the fact that people who are using it to excess aren’t usually eating in a healthy manner and it adds up. It doesn’t take long to see an improvement in the skin and someone’s general appearance after a break from drugs and alcohol that an appearance is better. You see better color return to the skin and yes, they look much healthier, even younger.”

However, Dr. Bruce Katz, board-certified dermatologist and Director of the Juva Skin and Laser Center, has a different take on Lindsay’s fresh new look:

“I see a number of changes. She probably stopped at her dermatologist’s office in between getting out of rehab and when this most recent photo was taken. Her cheeks are much fuller, so I think she’s had some cheek augmentation – Radiesse or Sculptra, most likely. Her eyebrows are more raised and her upper eyelid and lower lid are less baggy, which suggests she’s probably had some Botox to raise the brows and improve the appearance of the eyes. The lips are fuller, especially the bottom lip, so she’s probably had some filler injected, either Juvederm or Restylane.”

Whatever it is, I’m calling it now: this could be the best the starlet has looked since her days as a teen queen, and I love the fact that she looks absolutely gorgeous and young again. Has our pretty girl returned…or is it just Freaky Friday?

Bonnie Says: How To Take 10 Years Off Your Eyes!

Want to have that area under your eyes be as smooth as a baby’s bottom? I sure do!

And the good news today is that dermatologists swear you can turn back the clock, if you start seriously protecting your skin against the evil rays of the sun AND start using the right undereye cream.
Here’s what you need to know and what to do:

* The skin under the eyes is the thinnest skin on the face. It has very few sebaceous (oil – producing) glands so it gets dry easily and as you age, all your skin gets thinner, so you can develop that awful hollow look under your eyes, explains Dr. Howard Sobel, a clinical dermatologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in NYC.

* Because it is thinnest , the skin under your eyes is the MOST prone to sun damage of any skin on your body. That’s why you develop thin lines and wrinkles there first.

* Heavy under eye moisturizers can make your eyes puffy because they enable your skin to absorb too much water — the opposite effect to what you want.

Now here’s what you need to do and try!

* ALWAYS WEAR SUNSCREEN under your eyes, and below your eyebrows, to protect your youthful looks, when you’re at the beach or spending hours outdoors!
o Put At least a quarter teaspoon of sunscreen under each eye, advises Dr. Sobel
o For daily workday protection — use a special under eye cream with an SPF of at least 15

* Chose a specifically formulated daily under eye cream that’s packed with “peptides” to stimulate collagen production and antioxidants, to fight the effects of pollution, the sun and natural aging, says Dr. Patricia Wexler, a cosmetic dwematologist in NYC.
o Look for a 3 in 1 eye cream advises Dr. Wexler, that will depuff, protect against sun damage and build new collagen, which fills out the fine lines and wrinkles under the eyes.
o Look for these ingredients on bottles, and make sure your cream has at least one of these : peptides, vitamin C, retinols and kineten (a growth factor)
o Try different eye creams for day and night, suggests dermatologist Dr. Bruce Katz. He recommends a peptide cream, to slow the aging of skin cells for the daytime, and a cream with anti-oxidants or growth factors, like the cream, Neocutis, at night.

Now take a look at these Hollypick products!
